Of all the auspicious fasts, the fast of Ekadashi is deemed utmost significant. The Ekadashi that falls during the margasheersh month of hemant ritu is called as Utpanna Ekadashi. In the month of Margasheersh, on the Krishna paksha Ekadashi, the goddess of Ekadashi was born. The goddess of Ekadashi protected lord Vishnu by murdering a demon.

When a person observes the fast of Ekadashi constantly, he is blesses with financially lucrative and healthy life. The fast of Utpanna Ekadashi is also provides relief from distress and mental unrest. This year the Utpanna Ekadashi will be observed on November 22 & 23, 2019.

Fasting is considered to be the most important aspect of Ekadashi, Ekadashi that falls in the Krishna Paksha of Margasheersh month during Hemant season is also known as Utpanna and (Vaitarani) Ekadashi. On the day of Ekadashi, Goddess Ekadashi was born who killed Lord Vishnu by killing a demon named Mur, keeping fast on Ekadashi regularly gives wealth and healing. The fast of Utpanna Ekadashi is considered to be a fast for the attainment of children and salvation. By observing this fast, any kind of mental problem or mental disturbance is removed. This time, Utpanna (Vaitarani) Ekadashi fast will be celebrated on November 22 and on November 23.

When to observe the Utpanna Ekadashi fast?

The people who have never observed the Ekadashi fast, and want to start observing the fast should start with the Utpanna Ekadashi that falls during the Krishna paksha.

How to do the pooja for the Utpanna Ekadashi?

It is important to do the pooja after completing all the daily chores. It is often followed, that the person who is observing the fast should wake up early, and after completing all the chores should take a bath. After this, they should offer water to Lord Surya as well as should meditate on Lord Vishnu. After meditation, they should offer incense lamp to Lord Vishnu & Laddu Gopal. They should also worship, chant the name of god as well as offer bhog to God at night. If possible, they should sacrifice sleep for the night. When a person does all this, it is believed that God bless them with praises and fortune. On the day of Ekadashi, Brahmins should donate food, fruits and Dakshina, and ask God to forgive their mistakes & sins. If possible, a person should observe Ekadashi of the both the ‘paksha’ of the month.

The story that is often narrated while conducting the pooja of Utpanna Ekadashi is as follows:

Once upon a time, during satyug, a demon known by the name of Mur defeated the Lord Indra & Gods. After the defeat, Lord Indra went to Lord Vishnu and asked him to defeat the demons. Lord Vishnu successfully defeated the Demons but the demon Mur escaped. Lord Vishnu, noticing that the demon Mur ran away because of wear, went to the cave to take some rest. Demon Mur, taking the advantage of the moment, tried to kill Lord Vishnu when he was asleep. But before he can do, a Lady emerged from the body of Lord Vishnu and killed the demon Mur. Lord Vishnu, when awoke, asked the lady that who is she. The lady said that she is power originated in the body of Lord Vishnu, and hence, being impressed by this, Lord Vishnu name the lady Ekadashi and told her that whoever will observe fast in your name would release themselves from the distress of life and will move towards happy life. This Ekadashi is deemed important because it was originated (Utpanna) out of the body of Lord Vishnu.
