The month of Shravan is the fifth month of Hindu Calendar. It is considered as one of the holiest month in the Hindu Calendar. The month of Shravan derives its name from the Shravan Nakshatra as it is believed that this Nakshatra rules the skies during the month of Shravan. Hence, the name is derived from this nakshatra. The month of Shravan is the month of auspicious festivals and events & it is considered as the best time for all the important religious ceremonies.

Legend of the Month of Shravan

The legend of Samaudra Manthan took place in the month of Shravan. During this episode, the Halahal or poison that came out, was consumed by Lord Shiva which he subsequently stored in his throat, hence, turning it blue. Due to this incident he is also known as Neelkantha. To reduce the effect of poison, Lord Shiva also started wearing a crescent moon on his head.

Every Monday of the month of Shravan is considered as the Shravan Somvar. The month of Shravan is significant for the Hindu Religion because the it is the month of Lord Shiva. The month of Shravan holds significance for Hindu religion because it is considered as the Lord Shiva's favorite month. There is also a tradition for keeping the fast during this month.

Worshiping Lord Shiva in the month of Shravan with Bilva Leaves and offering water to him is considered very fruitful and auspicious. According to Shiv Puran, whoever makes a vow of fasting on Mondays of the month of Shravan will have all his/her wishes fulfilled.

The month of Shravan is also deeply related to the nature as it falls during the monsoon and the earth blossoms with flowers and trees.

Significance of fasting during Shravan

It is believed that Shravan Somvar is considered very beneficial for the unmarried girl. It is believed that by observing the Shravan Somvaar Vrat girls will get to married the person of their choice. Shravan somvaar vrat are important because it is believed that by observing it all your wishes can come true.

During the auspicious month of Shravan, the following kinds of fasts are kept:

  • Shravan Somvar (Monday) Fast: The fasts kept on Monday during the month of Shravan is called Shravan somvaar vrat. The day of Monday is also dedicated to the Lord Shiva.
  • The first Monday of the Shravan Month: The first Monday of the month of Shravan will be on 22nd July. This day also coincides with the festival of Naag panchami. It is considered important to do the rudrabhishek on the day of naag panchami. The people who also suffers from kaalsarp dosh, they should specifically do this pooja.
  • The third monday of the Shravan Month:Third Monday of the month of Shravan will be on 5th August 2019. This is one of the most auspicious day of the month of Shravan.
  • The fourth Monday of the Shravan Monrth:Fourth Monday of the month of Shravan will be on 12th august, 2019. This day is considered auspicious as on this day, Shiva and Parvati will venture on the earth together. So doing a rudrabhishek on this day will lead fulfillment of all the aspirations.
  • The fasting for 16 Mondays: The Month of Shravan is considered very auspicious. Hence it is also considered as the best month to begin the solah somvaar vrat.
  • Pradosh Vrat: To gain the wisdom of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, the fast on the day of pradosh is observed.
