The 71st Republic Day of India

26th January is celebrated as the Republic Day of India, a commemoration of the day when India’s Constitution of was implemented. This year would celebrate the 71st republic day of India.

Why Do We Celebrate Republic Day?

Republic day is celebrated to commemorate the inception of Indian Constitution. Indian gained Independence from the British Raj on August 15, 1947 but due to the absence of constitution, India remained under the rule of King George VI as a constitutional monarchy. On 26th January, 1950, two and a half years after gaining independence, the constitution was implemented countrywide making India a socialist, secular, sovereign and a democratic republic.

Republic Day of India – A History

The Republic Day of India is symbolic of true courage and patriotism. The republic day marks the anniversary of the implementation of Constitution making India a secular, sovereign, socialist as well as a democratic state. The independence was achieved after a great struggle against the British.

Despite the fact that India had got its independence from the British Raj on August 15, 1947, it still did not have a perpetual constitution. The organization of Independent India depended on the altered Government of India Act, 1935 and hence, India, before the implementation of Constitution, was ruled by King George of VI of Britain. On 28 August 1947, a Drafting Committee was designated to draft India’s constitution. This council was headed by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar alongside a few others.

A draft constitution was created and submitted to the Assembly on 4th November 1947. After numerous contemplations and a few changes the Constitution of India was signed on January 24, 1950 and was implemented throughout the country on January 26th, 1950. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was chosen as the first President of Republic India.

How is Republic Day Celebrated? – Republic Day Celebration

The 26th of January is a government declared holiday all over the country. The Republic Day celebration is held with great enthusiasm and gusto all over the country. Students from various schools, cadets from army and air force participate in the Republic Day parade. The Republic Day Parade and various cultural events are organized by the soldiers at Raj path in front of India Gate in New Delhi.

For the Republic Day Celebration, a parade at Delhi’s Raj path is organized by the Indian Government. Various cultural performances are shown in the Republic Day parade, such as, the regional dances, a show by Indian Army and Indian Air Force.

The republic day parade held in New Delhi especially begins when a wreath is presented by the Indian Prime Minister at the Amar Jyoti Jawan at India Gate. This is done to remember all the sacrifices of the soldiers of the Indian Army while protecting their country. At the Republic Day Celebration various national awards such as Mahavir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, Param Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra as well as other Bravery Medals are also distributed to the soldiers of the armed forces, general public, and students of schools.

Various patriotic songs are also performed by the school children at republic day parade. The military forces perform tricks on motorcycles and pay homage to the President; while the Air Force presents feats on the fighter plane making Indian Tricolor.

At republic day celebration, various traditional and cultural programs are presented by professionals from different states to focus on the history and culture of the country. During the grand celebration, a rally of the Prime Minister and the Lok Tarang Rashtriya Folk Dance Festival are also held from 24 January to 29 January.
