Story of Putrada Ekadashi Vrat

In the beginning of Dwapar Yug, Mahijit was the king of the city Mahishmati. King Mahjit had no son and due to which he used to remain worried. He said that for those who do not have children, it is a cause of sorrow for both the world and the hereafter. . The king took many measures to get a son, but the king did not get a son. His minister went to the forest to solve the king's problem; where he found Mahatma Lomash Muni, a scholar of all scriptures, who knew the esoteric elements of Sanatan Dharma. Lomash Muni had already known their problems. He told the king's minister: I will surely do the best. I was born only for the benefits of others so do not doubt it.

The minister bowed to the sage Lomash. Sage Lomash was placed before his king's and relayed the solution for the problem. Sage Lomash told the story of the king's former birth. Muni Lomash said that the king was a poor Vaishya in his previous life. Being poor, he did many bad deeds. Once the king was hungry for two days and the next day, on the Dwadashi of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month, he went to drink water at a reservoir when he was thirsty. A thirsty cow was drinking water at the same place. The king removed the thirsty cow from drinking water and started drinking water himself, so the king has to suffer the sorrow of not being able to father as son. Due to being hungry, he had the privilege of becoming the king. Hearing this story, the king's ministers said, "O sage, tell us a solution so that the king’s problem can be solved."

Muni Lomash said that on the Ekadasahi that falls during the Shravan Shukla Paksha which is also called Putrada Ekadashi, everyone should observe a fast. If they will fast during the day & awaken at night, then all the previous life karmas will be destroyed. Hence, after observing this the king will definitely be blessed with a son. When Shravan Shukla Ekadashi arrived, then according to the sage's advice, everyone fasted and awakened at night on the Putrada Ekadashi. Thus, on the day of Dwadashi, the queen conceived as a result of the fast and was blessed with a son.
