One day Maharishi Vyas told the Pandavas the law and the fruits of Ekadashi fast. On this day, when he started discussing the defects of food, Bhimsen expressed his objection and said, "Father! While observing Ekadashi, the entire Pandava family should not consume food on this day, I will not be able to follow your order. I cannot live without eating. Therefore, to avoid the hardship of staying fast on twenty-four Ekadashis, tell me one such fast which I do not have any special inconvenience and will also get the fruits that other people will get on fasting twenty-four Ekadashi.
Maharishi Vyas knew that there is a fire called Vrika in the abdomen of Bhimsen. That is why their hunger does not calm down even after eating a lot of food. Therefore, understanding this kind of sentiment of Bhimsen, Maharishi Vyas ordered, "Dear Bhima! You do only a fast on Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi. In this fast, there is no fault of drinking water during bathing. On this day, do not eat food, take as much water as you can in the golden currency of a Masha Jawan. Thus, by observing this fast, other twenty-three Ekadashis will be blamed for eating food and will also get the benefit of the virtues of complete Ekadashis. ”Because Bhima had pledged in front of Maharishi to fast for one Ekadashi only, so this fast started doing. For this reason, it is also called Bhimseni Ekadashi.
