About Gupt Navaratri

The Navratri are celebrated four times in a year; hence, there are four Navratri in a year. The Navratri that are widely celebrated are Chaitra & Shardiya Navratri whereas Gupt Navratri is celebrated in the months of Magha & Ashadh. In Indian culture, Gupta Navratri are considered have more importance than Chaitra and Shardiya Navaratri. Unlike, Chaitra Navaratri, in which 9 avatars of Goddess Durga is worshipped; in Gupta Navratri nine different goddesses are worshiped.

The Gupt Navratri also has special significance for the ascetics. The significance of Gupt Navratri is that the devotees should observe it with strict rules, purity & restrain. The Gupt Navratri date that falls in the month of Magh starts from 25 January 2020 to 3 February 2020.

On Gupt Navratri, Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalratri, Mahagauri, Siddhidatri, these nine forms are especially worshiped on different days. Ten Mahavidya goddesses that are related to ‘Tantra Sadhna’ are also worshiped in Gupta Navratri. During Gupta Navaratri, many devotees also worship Goddess Kali, Goddess Tara Devi, Goddess Tripura Sundari, Goddess Bhuvaneshwari, Goddess Chinnamasta, Goddess Tripura Bhairavi, Goddess Maa Dhrumavati, Goddess Bagalamukhi, Goddess Matangi and Goddess Kamala Devi for Mahavidya.

  • Abhijit Muhurta - Ghatasthana Lagna - Pisces Lagna from 12 noon to 12.55 pm

Whom should you worship on Gupt Navratri?

  • 25 January, Saturday – Goddess Shailputri is worshipped
  • 26 January Sunday – Goddess Bhramacharini is worshipped
  • 27 January Monday – Goddess Chandraghanta is worshipped
  • 28 January Tuesday – Goddess Chandraghanta is worshipped
  • January 29 Wednesday – Goddess Kushmanda is worshipped
  • 30 January Thursday – Goddess Skandamata is worshipped
  • 31 January Friday – Goddess Katyayani is worshipped
  • February 1 Saturday – Goddess Kalratri is worshipped
  • February 2 Sunday – Goddess Mahagauri is worshipped
  • February 3 Monday – Goddess Siddhidatri is worshipped

How to Worship on Gupt Navratri?

Gupt Navratri should be worshiped like other Navratri. It is important to observe purity and strictness in routine & observe fasts. Goddess Durga should be worshipped. On Ashtami or Navami i.e. eighth & ninth day of Gupt Navratri, the little girls should be worshipped i.e. kanya pujan should be done.

What should you offer on Gupt Navratri?

  • White dishes should be offered to Goddess Shailputri that are made with Cow’s butter/ghee.
  • Sweet should be offered to Goddess Brahmacharini.
  • Sweets made from milk such as kheer, rasgulla and dry fruits should be offered to Goddess Chandraghanta.
  • Dishes made with made of pure butter or ghee should be offered to Goddess Kushmanda.
  • Bananas should be offered to Goddess Skandamata.
  • Pure honey should be offered to Goddess Katyayani.
  • Dishes made with jaggery should be offered to Goddess Kalratri.
  • Coconut should be offered to Goddess Mahagauri.
  • Sweet should be offered to Goddess Siddhidatri.

During Magh Gupta Navaratri, people cherish rare powers & people try to attain rare powers by doing long meditation. By keeping fast, chanting mantras the devotees show their devotion to the goddess. It is believed that at this time the goddess immediately accepts the prayers of her devotees and fulfills their wishes. Gupt Navratri are observed for the attainment of strength as well as for the elimination for problems.

What should the homemaker do during Gupta Navratri?

Homemakers who want worldly things, means of enjoyment, luxury, happiness and healthy life should recite Durga saptashti during these nine days. If there is not so much time, then recite Saptashloki Durga daily. In order to please the Goddess and for the perfection of meditation, one should only meditate on the Goddess while abstaining from negative emotions such as greed, anger, lust during the nine days of Gupt Navaratri.
